Dutasteride is a dual inhibitor of both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase, providing more comprehensive DHT suppression than finasteride alone. It is prescribed for androgenetic alopecia, particularly in patients seeking more aggressive DHT reduction.

Dutasteride irreversibly inhibits both type I and type II isoforms of 5-alpha reductase, reducing serum DHT by approximately 90% compared to roughly 70% with finasteride. This broader enzyme inhibition provides more complete blockade of androgenic effects on hair follicles.
Side effects are similar to finasteride but may be slightly more common due to greater DHT suppression. Dutasteride has a long half-life (~5 weeks), so effects persist after discontinuation. Not recommended for women of childbearing potential.
